Volume 8: Rotation War Game

Volume 8: This activity is a game to give kids practice with rotational symmetry.

To play, print out a copy of the page for each player, then cut out the boxes to make 20 cards each.  Here is a colored version in case your institution pays for colored copying.

This card game is based on the classic card game War.  In the usual game of War the card with the highest number wins.  Here, the card with shape with the highest order of rotational symmetry wins.

A shape has rotational symmetry if it looks as if its position hasn't changed after a rotation by a partial turn around a central point.  The "order" of rotational symmetry of an object is the number of different rotational positions in which the object can be turned and still looks as if its position is the same.

The goal is to draw what such a cube would look like in two dimensions from the top view, side view, and front view.
The students should draw their answers on the answer sheet template.
